Hidden Loads: The Quiet Struggles We Bear

What’s a hidden load? It’s the weight no one notices; it’s carried in the way people move, the words left unsaid, the heaviness in their eyes. It’s that unseen pressure that quietly rests on the shoulders of many, gently but constantly pushing down.

This is different from the burdens we can see—”grocery bags, clutter, unwashed dishes.” It doesn’t have a label. It doesn’t scream for attention. It simply exists in the quiet of what’s unspoken and what’s felt deep inside.

A hidden load isn’t always sad. Sometimes it’s the anxiety of not meeting expectations, the tug-of-war between who we are and who we think we should be. Or the exhaustion of keeping up appearances when the heart is weary, playing a role we didn’t choose, or holding emotions with no place to release them. This load grows in silence, often because there’s no one to talk to or no way to express it without fearing judgment.

It can feel a little unsettling because the weight is often in our minds and hearts—things we don’t always know how to let go of. We hold onto forgotten conversations, questions we never ask but think about constantly, and apologies we never say aloud. There’s so much pressure to appear “okay,” yet that mask often hides what’s truly inside.

In my book The Silent Abuse, I dive deep into these very struggles—those quiet, creeping burdens that slip under the radar but never seem to leave your back. It’s the kind of weight that sneaks up on you, one you barely even notice until it’s too much to carry. I share how these silent battles have played out in my own life journey, and how I learned to face them head-on. It’s not always easy, but acknowledging the hidden load is the first step toward shedding its weight.

But here’s the bright side: we don’t have to bear it all by ourselves. The silence starts to shift the moment we open up—just a little. When we say the things we’ve been afraid to say, when we share what we thought we needed to hide, the load doesn’t vanish, but it becomes lighter.
